Explicitly forbidden substances
A variety of substances are considered as harmful (haraam) for humans to consume and, therefore, forbidden as per various Quranic verses:
- Pork meat (i.e. flesh of pig)[Qur'an 2:173]. Pork may be eaten in any instance wherein it will save your life and there is no other sustenance.
- Blood[Qur'an 2:173]
- All carnivores and birds of prey
- Animals slaughtered in the name of anyone but Allah. All that has been dedicated or offered in sacrifice to an idolatrous altar or saint or a person considered to be "divine". [Qur'an 2:173] [Qur'an 5:3]
- Carrion[Qur'an 2:173]
- An Animal that has been strangled, or beaten to death, or killed by a fall, or gored to death, or savaged by a beast of prey, except that which you may have slaughtered while it was still alive; [Qur'an 5:3]
- Food over which Allah's name is not pronounced. [Qur'an 6:121]
- Alcohol and other intoxicants. [Qur'an 5:90-91]

I read a thing on the difference between Jewish and Muslim dietary law. They are similar but Jewish law is much more prohibitive therefore Muslim's in general can use Kosher foods pretty much without problems but Jews cannot necessarily use Muslim prepared foods.
i asked your dad several days ago what kosher meant- can't remember what we were talking about. anway, he said it's any food that has been prayed over by a rabbi. don't know if that's true exactly, but here's my question: if that's what kosher means, does a muslim praying over kosher food mean it's then ok to eat even though it's been prayed over by a jewish rabbi? i guess first i should ask what it means to have allah's name pronounced over the food? is it like a christian prayer? is it similar to what rabbi's do that makes a food kosher?
I asked Chak and he gave me the same answer I was thinking of anyway. Kosher meat is okay for most Muslims to eat because they slaughter it basically the same way as Muslims and Muslims also believe that Jews believe in the same god as them, so it has been blessed in the name of Allah(God). In fact some Islamic authorities, state that the ritual slaughter can also be performed by Jews It is similar to a Christian prayer. I found a article on wikipedia on a comparison of Jewish and Islamic dietary laws. Of course alot of the laws depend largely on individual commitment and interpretation.
interesting! so if it's kosher, it's already been blessed according to islamic law even if done by a rabbi? it doesn't have to then be blessed by a mullah (is that who would do it)? so muslims accept jewish prayers? the jewish God and Allah are the same? do they believe christians and/or mormons pray to the same god. maybe not, because we make Christ part of our prayers.
